What Does My Vehicle Need To Tow A Trailer?

To tow any tent or travel trailer you will be required to have a 7 way round plug (see example below)  and a brake controller.

7 Way Plug

What Is A Brake Controller And Why Do I Need One?

A brake controller is an electronic device that activates and, as the word suggests, controls the electric brakes of a trailer. A brake controller can be roughly split into an interface positioned in the cab within the driver’s reach and the central part responsible for activating the trailer’s brakes. Without a brake controller there is nothing to communicate with the electric brakes on the trailer to engage them and without that you are in breach of road rules for safe towing.

How Do I Know If I Have A Brake Controller?

There are 2 different types of brake controller options, one that is integrated into the tow vehicle from the manufacturer and will have a small controller sliding lever built into the dash with a plus and minus sign. The second option is a non-integrated option; it will be a small box mounted somewhere on the dash within reach of the driver (usually at knee level)  with a small sliding lever or buttons on it with a plus or minus symbol. Please see the examples below for reference.

What Do I Do If I Do Not Have A Brake Controller In My Vehicle But Would Like To Rent A Trailer?

If your vehicle is properly wired for a brake controller but does not have one installed you can rent a Kurt Wireless bluetooth brake controller along with the trailer. Speak with a team member to help determine if this option is available for you.

If you do not have a brake controller and would like to permanently add one to your vehicle for future trailer rental uses or future trailer ownership we can help, prices vary depending on vehicle but a member of our team would be more than happy to work with you to determine what your vehicle needs in order to tow safely and build you a quote for brake controller options.

What Are The Insurance Requirements?

Our trailers are fully insured, however proof of Insurance on your towing vehicle is required for all rentals. Additional documentation from your insurance company stating that your policy covers the trailer while it is in motion is also required. If you are unable to obtain this documentation, we can help you obtain MBA insurance for the temporary coverage of the vehicle.

Why Do I Need An Equalizer?

Because we value the safety and lives of you and your family traveling with you, we have outfitted all of our trailers with Equalizer Stabilization and Sway control hitches. We did this to better protect you and your family on your many adventures. Because every vehicle is different, we will need to properly adjust the hitch so we can ensure your towing experience is as safe as possible..
